This isn’t a Be Hive event, but it features one of the Be Hive founders, nutritionist (and much more!) Liz Blake Brackbill.

Liz Blake will speak about how the imbalance of masculine and feminine archetypes in our culture affects our individual and collective health. She will share her personal transformative story of healing physical imbalances, through the re-integration of the sacred feminine by seeking alternatives to the western medical model of health. She will address the alchemical process of the integration between mind and body, psyche and matter, as a tool for healing and transformation. She will also discuss the importance of community and the earth as essential elements of this re-integration process for our individual and collective healing.

Bio
Liz Blake is committed to re-integrating the sacred feminine into our culture through holistic health and healing. She is a practicing healer and health consultant. She holds an individualized BA degree from New York University in holistic health with a focus on nutrition, archetypal psychology, and energy healing. She is also a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, has worked and taught at The Source Farm eco-village in Jamaica, and is currently studying yoga.

Here is a copy of the candida diet chart we talked about in the workshop (depending on how bad your problem is, you should stick to it for a month up to 6 months), plus the follow-up notes we sent out.
********************
Let us know if you guys want to get together in a month or so and compare notes about your progress!

Here are some of the topics and resources we discussed in the workshop:

Candida overgrowth happens when 2 problems converge – too much sugar for the yeast to eat, and too little immune response (in the form of your own immune cells + the help of “good” bacteria that inhabit your gastrointestinal tract).

Boost your immune system as much as possible. This means limiting exposure to chemicals in cleaning products, soaps, shampoos, make-up, perfumes, etc. Stress also weakens your immune system, so relax, meditate, do yoga.

Drink lots of chlorine-free water (chlorine kills “good” bacteria). If you don’t have a filter you can leave the water in the fridge overnight, leave it in the sun on the windowsill for an hour, or pour it back and forth from glass to glass a few times.

Fatty foods are good at fighting sugar cravings – keep some nuts with you.

A note on the “high glycemic index” foods in the “up for debate” column on the handout you got – high glycemic index means that the sugar in the food becomes available to your body very quickly. In the case of something like a parsnip though the *total* amount of sugar contained in the food isn’t all that much. So even though it becomes available quickly it’s still not all *that* bad. It’s probably OK to eat small amounts of those foods once in a while when on the diet, but use your discretion.

Also, here’s a fun/gross body ecology test: first thing in the morning before you do anything else, spit into a glass of water. Come back in 15-30
minutes – if there are strings growing down from the top of the water you have problems.
http://www.healthcoachvideos.com/2007/10/26/free-candida-saliva-test/)

Here is a link to Amber’s almond milk recipe – just don’t add agave and it’s totally candida-diet friendly. http://www.behivethrives.com/?p=133
More recipes coming soon! Try googling diabetic-friendly meals and you will find a lot of good stuff.

Herbs – in addition to the herbs/supplements listed on the hand-out, try oil of oregano (tincture).
Boric acid suppositories – you can make your own (vitamin stores carry empty capsules and boric acid) or buy them from http://www.rockwellnutrition.com/Yeast-Arrest-Boric-Acid-Suppositories-by-Vitanica-Non-Returnable-_p_845.html

Acidophilus suppositories – use non-coated pills that will dissolve in the vagina – like Schiff brand or GNC store brand
I just found out the HLC candaclear suppositories have been discontinued. AH! Basically though all the HLC acidophilus products are great – shipped on ice. You could make your own suppositories the same way you do with boric acid. http://www.rockwellnutrition.com/HLC-Intensive-caps-for-BV-by-Pharmax-Non-Returnable_p_1069.html
Some people use yogurt but I do not recommend because of the sugar in the milk (store brands aren’t usually so sour that *all* the sugar is gone)

When you first start the diet I recommend doing about a 2 week regimen with the suppostories – 2-3 days of boric acid followed by a day or 2 of probiotic suppositories. Keep alternating until the 2 weeks are up. Then do maintenence once a month (either around your period or whenever your most yeasty time of your cycle is) for the next 6 months or so.

Obviously also do it whenever you have a flare-up.

I have attached a list of probiotics that were tested by an independent lab and found to be good.

We talked about the importance of drinking water and staying regular. Here are some colon clense/detox programs that are gentle and work well.
http://www.drnatura.com/toxinout_program.php)
http://www.drnatura.com/colonix_program.php)
No need to go all out and spend a ton of money though. Maybe just take some psillium husk pills if you have constipation problems. Drink water!

Great Books and Websites:
The Body Ecology Diet (what Liz had at the workshop)
Healing with Whole Foods
The Yeast Connection
The Yeast Connection Cookbook
bodyecology.com
https://www.rockwellnutrition.com/VC-Dr-Tori-Article_ep_51-1.html

Again, we’ll send out some good recipes in the next week or so. We hope you found the workshop helpful and supportive!

Best,

Do you suffer from fatigue, frequent sinus infections, skin conditions, intestinal complaints, or recurrent yeast infections? Your symptoms could be caused by Candida overgrowth – a very common condition resulting from an imbalance of flora in the intestine. Varying degrees of imbalance can be caused by the standard American diet of refined sugars and simple carbs, a stressful lifestyle, broad spectrum antibiotics, and undiagnosed food allergies. Add in a little holiday cheer (read: stress, overeating, alcohol, sweets…) and you have a recipe for disaster!

At the workshop we’ll be going over avoidance techniques and also dietary, herbal, and lifestyle changes you can make to get back on track. There are 10x more bacterial/fungal cells in your body than human cells – make sure they are the friendly kind!

At Christmas-time – we see the corporations go to work. All advertising wants us to demote the things we already have, so that our presents must be purchased, and as broke as we are – purchased on credit. But that kind of celebration the natural world disagrees with. And we’ve been noticing the vehemence of this disagreement. The earth’s evolutionary pace of change has critical-massed with opportunistic diseases and melting ice-caps and the unbearable silence of extinction. This is the form the earth’s free speech now takes. What is life on earth saying to us?

Stop and focus, let your senses dilate. Find the thing you already have that may be under-used, over-looked, hiding in plain sight. Cast a new eye on your old street. Create your gift HERE. Don’t drill it and pipe it thousands of miles. Don’t sweatshop it and keep a fleet of ships and trucks. Don’t wrap cheap stuff in plastic and idle yourself in that traffic jam from Christmas Hell.

Yogurt Making + Almond Milk Workshop!

You will be thrilled at how fast and easy it is to make your own yogurt at home! No special thermometers or electric heating doohickies required.

Processed nut milks are pasteurized to the point of needing nutrients artificially added back in, plus they contain many emulsifiers and preservatives. Homemade nut milks taste better, are more nutritious, cheaper, contain only food ingredients, and use less packaging and travel-time than their store-bought alternatives.

Connect with your food, and by extension the earth! Your homemade version, made with love, is better for you and the environment.

Bring a dish to share and stay afterwards for the potluck! Space is limited, so please reserve your spot online by paying through paypal: behivethrives@gmail.com Recommended Exchange: $10

Workshop host Amber Kusmenko holds Permaculture Design Certificates from both NYC’s Center for Bioregional Living and Brazil’s Ecocentro IPEC. She is Chair of the environmental non profit Ciclo
